Beatties Ford Library - Twenty-Five Year Time Capsule
Former Director Robert Cannon envisioned a unique way to preserve the history of North Branch Library, the Beatties Ford Road area and the new Beatties Ford Branch Library and Learning Resource Center: a Time Capsule. He enlisted Joan Carothers, who retired in 1995 from the staff of The Library's Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room, to coordinate the project. For more than a year, The Library has been collecting materials for a twenty-five year Time Capsule which will be sealed in the wall of Beatties Ford Road Public Library at its dedication on April 20, 1997. Items in the time capsule will illustrate the history, culture and evolution of the Beatties Ford Road neighborhood, its citizens, organizations, businesses and institutions, particularly the North Branch Library, which has served residents of University Park and other northwest Charlotte neighborhoods for forty years. Items include photographs, maps, documents, directories, newsletters and cassettes; even a videotape of the dedication ceremonies for Beatties Ford Road Library. It will also contain a scroll with names from neighborhood groups and those who attended the ground-breaking ceremony in May, 1996.The Time Capsule will also contain "Letters to the Future" from students and community residents; projecting goals, listing aspirations, and making predictions; which will be opened at two, five and ten year intervals. The Library thanks the following individuals and organizations who have contributed to the Beatties Ford Road Library Time Capsule. Their names will be displayed on a permanent plaque in the entry lobby of the library.
